Top Ten Tips for Gluten Free Living

1.      Be in control of what you eat, eat as little processed food as possible, when you do eat processed food always check the label very carefully.

2.      Gluten free food can be more expensive, buy in bulk when possible as this is often cheaper. If you have a friend you is also gluten intollerant get together and buy together.

3.      Eat seasonally, cook in bulk and use your freezer.

4.      If you can’t get what you want locally shop on line, you can normally find what you want and also you may be able to get a discount if you buy in bulk.

5.      Join a Coeliac support group such as Coeliac UK, they can give you good advice and will normally know the local outlets.

6.      Experiment with your cooking, don’t forget to make some notes in your cook book on what worked and what did not, you won’t remeber what you did unless you write it down. The web often has good recipe ideas, we have some recipe ideas and the free magazine Living from Orgran has some great ideas.

7.      Use recipes that are naturally moist as they will tend to hold together better.

8.      Try batch mixing your dry ingredients and write on the bag what they contain and the date, then you only have to add the wet ingredients and cook.

9.      Try new things and be adventurous, in the West wheat flour is dominate, but in large parts of the world other flours are the norm, so try Thai or Mexican food for example where wheat flour is not a natural ingredient.

10.   When you eat out make sure the staff know you must avoid gluten, if you are abroad take a card with the necessary translations on.
