Although demand at the moment for Pumpkin Seeds is low reports suggest that prices in China (a major Pumpkin consuming market) are on the increase. As many farmers have decided they will not grow pumpkin again this year because of the falling prices, it should be expected that the crop for 2012 should be smaller than last year again. On the other hand various farmers and packers will face a serious carryover of the current crop if sales do not improve in the coming months.
Although the market in Europe is still fairly quiet, we hear from exporters that the raw material prices in China are rising for the shine skin material. Offers for the in shell shine skin are with some packers exceeding the kernel prices. As there is still a strong demand for in shell, there is no reason left for packers to hull the product. That can only mean that shine skin kernel prices will rise in the next few onths.
The general quality of the goods that has arrived in Europe has been reported to be poorer than in previous years. Normally about a third of the crop consists of AA grade material, but with the remaining quantity of this year that is only about 10%.

Found in Dried Fruit
To try and help our customers with their buying and so that they can get best value for money in purchasing their organic dried fruit and also their non-organic dried fruit we occasionally review what we expect to happen to prices.
Sultanas – at the moment there is some uncertainty about the new crop as the frost season is not yet over, if there is a frost then prices are likely to increase, if the weather is kind then prices are unlikley to increase.
Raisins – in California the demand for grapes for wine production is high, this may have an impact on the overall costs of grapes and thus push up the costs of raisins.
Apricots – winter temperatures in the main growing area of Turkey have been very low, this is likely to impact on the crop and therefore we may expect the price of Apricots to increase.

Found in nuts
Looking forward it might be helpful to get some idea of what is likely to happen to nut prices:
- Brazil Nuts – Prices have finally started to fall despite attempts by Bolivian processors and exporters, who are currently sitting on higher priced stocks, to keep the market firm.
- Cashew Nuts - Prices have dropped from the record highs of 2011and despite a renewed interest in Cashews buying; we do not expect to see prices bounce back, in the near future.
- Almonds – Despite a record crop, California Almond prices continue to firm. This is due mainly to increased sales with year to date shipments increased by approximately 11%. Despite this, almonds still remain one of the cheapest nuts on the market. The market is keenly watching the bee activity in the orchards, as it is now bloom time. The market pricing going forward will be determined over the next few weeks as the results of the bloom are
known.
- Hazelnuts - All continues well with the development of the new 2012 Hazelnut crop as weather conditions in the Turkish growing regions, although slightly colder than normal, have been conducive to the potential of a good crop. This follows from our report on 6th March which showed that the initial flower counts were indicating the potential for 750,000 tonnes, in shell 2012 crop. Of course we still have to remain cautious as any frost over the next two /three weeks can have a negative impact on the crop. For the time being all looks well.
The optimistic outlook, along with a lack of demand has affected prices for current 2011 crop. Stock holders, who still see the potential for a tight supply position in the summer months, are a little less inclined to carry too much whilst the prospects for 2012 crop continue to look good. It cannot be ruled out that we still see a tight supply of 2011 crop in the summer months as the stock is still expected to be no more than 450,000 tonnes in shell, which we know will barely be enough to cover demand until new crop arrives, hopefully in mid-September.
