Buckwheat Spirals: buckwheat spirals are becoming more popular as time goes on. Orgran buckwheat spirals have a slight nutty flavour, good with any of your favourite sauces, but especially tasty with a mushroom sauce. They also work well in a summer salad. Buckwheat pasta is high in protein. Cook in boiling water for 6-10 minutes, or until tender, then strain and rinse thoroughly under warm running water.
Buckwheat also features in other Orgran buckwheat products.
Corn options: in addition to the straight corn spirals and rice and corn spirals (reviewed below), we stock corn and spinach rigati, corn and vegetable shells, and corn and vegetable spirals.
Orgran gourmet corn pasta is produced from yellow sundrenched maize meal and is superb for salads and as a main meal. Maize is rich in complex carbohydrates and important dietary fibre, and low in fat. It is a crop that has been in existence for many thousands of years and has been a staple food for many civilizations.
Essential Fibre: Orgran's Essential Fibre range has come and gone over the years but the Crispibread has stood the test of time. Fibre can be lacking in a gluten free diet and this is a delicious way to rebalance that.
Multigrain: the Orgran multigrain pastas are a mix of nutritious rice, sun-dried maize and millet; one has added amaranth and the other added quinoa. Amaranth and quinoa are nutritional wonders, with high levels of protein. These 'new world' grains were once a staple food of the ancient Incas and Aztecs. Combining different grains can increase the nutritional value of a meal.
Rice and corn options: rice and corn pasta (RisOMais) is the most popular gluten-free pasta available today. It has superior cooking qualities and most nearly resembles wheat pasta. It is a pasta for everyone and suitable even for the meticulous pasta connoisseur. In comparison to wheat pasta, this product is much easier to digest, as well as being more versatile, suitable both for traditional Mediterranean recipes and for an oriental stir-fry.
Rice and millet: a popular variety of pasta that contains millet. Millet is an alkaline grain boasting a beneficial source of B17, also known as laetrile, which is scientifically recognized as an anti-cancer substance occurring naturally in this grain. This particular combination is recommended by many dietary specialists, as it is a suitable base for those with food sensitivities.
Tinned or canned pasta: the tinned (canned) range of gluten-free pasta from Orgran forms a good, quick and tasty meal - ideal for your children, or if you're in a hurry. The original spaghetti in tomato is a superior blend of rice and legume split pea pasta, combined with a delicate tomato sauce. The 'alternative grain pasta meal' is a good source of carbohydrates and protein, with a subtle tomato and basil sauce.
Some recipe ideas using Orgran gluten-free pasta.
Cooking Orgran gluten-free pasta is not too different from cooking convential wheat pasta. It is important to follow the instructions on the pack and use the recommended cooking time.
If you follow these three easy steps, you should be fine:
Step 1: for every 250g packet of Orgran gluten-free pasta, you will need 5 litres of boiling water. Bring the water to a rolling boil and then add the pasta. Although the pasta does not need salt or oil, it may be added to the water to taste.
Step 2: stir gently and continue to boil for the time indicated on the pack, then taste and check the pasta has reached your preferred consistency. Each Orgran variety has a recommended cooking time stated on the pack, but this can vary slightly depending on the temperature of the water.
Step 3: strain the pasta through a colander and rinse gently under warm running water. Serve immediately with your favourite sauce.
Orgran lasagne sheets are instant, provided that they are layered with adequate sauce (to give moisture) and baked in a foil-covered tray. Note: excess liquid sauce can cause overcooking.
