Why Organic Nuts
Many nuts are grown in poor soil on steep hill sides, this may be combined with high rainfall. This can be a problem as it is difficult to maintain soil fertility with high levels of soil leaching. In conventional farming soil leaching is often balanced by the addition of artificial fertilizers, however excess fertilizer ends up in rivers causing problems considerable problems, also the natural ecosystems suffers through the use of fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides. In an organic system the organic nut orchards are often shared with cattle and sheep that graze under the organic nut trees. In grazing they provide additional income to the farmer and naturally increase soil fertility with their manure.
