Tahini is simply ground sesame seeds made into a smooth paste. Its high in protein and energy whilst being low in carbohydrates. Also available in a larger tub, this is a handy jar for everyday use.
Light tahini differs from dark tahini in that the light is made with hulled sesame seeds and the dark with whole, unhulled ones. Both are normally toasted but the dark has a stronger flavour. Tahini is often used as an ingredient to make Hummus, with the addition of chick peas, lemon and garlic. Here is a quick homemade hummus recipe. It can also be mixed with honey for a wonderful sandwich filler.
Sesame seeds are really high in calcium too. Once opened best used within 3 months.
