The powdered husk of the seed of the plantain, psyllium powder is a concentrated source of gluten free dietary fibre and acts as a thickener or bulking agent in food.
Use it in smoothies, savoury baked goods and as a replacement for eggs in cooking.
It is not digested in the small intestine, but partially broken down in the colon, where it promotes the growth of 'good' bacteria. Psyllium husk swells as it absorbs water, toxins and waste, acting rather like a sponge in the intestinal tract.
