This is a small pack of delicious crystallised root ginger, usually grown in China and a great size for using at home ot decorate cakes or as a nibble.
Root Ginger is, as you may guess, the underground part of the ginger plant. It is quite fibrous and has a hot pungent taste and smell that it is prized for. Used in savoury asian cookery it adds heat to a dish - so even though this crystallized ginger is candied, that is steeped in a sugar solution and then coated with sugar granules, it does still pack a bit of a punch.
With no artificial colours and, as it is organically grown, no residues of pesticides, it is healthier than many sweets but is still a treat. It's lovely and warming though and it is quite hard to eat a lot at one time.
Ginger can help to settle nausea and it is also thought to help lower cholesterol.
Eat as it is or use chopped in and on top of ginger cake, or even for a really luxurious treat, coat in plain chocolate.
And why not try it in rhubarb and ginger pudding, ginger ice-cream, ginger sponge, pear and ginger pudding, (nearly) everyone loves ginger! Take a pack on a long journey or nibble when indigestion strikes.
